This counseling is psychologically based Christian counseling. This means that the counseling service that is provided will be compatible with Bible based Christian values and beliefs. Those who desire scriptural support will receive it if they ask or it seems appropriate to the situation.

Dr. Kulp provides a unique blend of individual and systems perspectives to the practice of therapy. From individual therapy certain cognitive- behavioral aspects are used to help the client understand their problems and improve their situation. The client or family is also helped to understand their family system and how to optimize their relationships with their significant others. Clients are encouraged to develop and use their personal resources to improve their functioning in difficult situations.

Sometimes Christians are concerned about whether the focus in counseling is on the Bible or on psychology. Christian counseling integrates both. It has been Dr. Kulp’s experience that many church going people have had ample access to pastors and Bible Study and it hasn’t resolved their problems. They desire more of a problem focused approach that can improve their current situation. Secondly, couples and families may have participants in counseling who do not accept the Bible as an authority for living, but may accept psychological insight to help resolve the problems they have.

Youth and Children:

Dr. Kulp has had extensive experience working with young people. He was the child care director at Bailey Memorial Youth Ranch for two years where he supervised the living situation house parents and children on the facility.

Parents should be aware of the following when bringing your youth for counseling. Young people are usually unwilling participants in therapy and require extra time and energy spent in building a therapeutic alliance before treatment can begin.

By the time many young people reach the counseling office they may be resistant to lectures and punishment. They may be used to deception and resentful of adults in general. If these young people are deeply involved in damaging or illegal activities helping them open up and deal with these behaviors will be a difficult process. Because of these issues the counseling process can be equally challenging for parents.

It is important that parents who bring their children to counseling understand and discuss the process with Dr. Kulp before it begins. This is especially true of adolescents who will be granted an appropriate amount of confidentiality, which is essential to the therapeutic environment.
